Why Utility Based Shared Hosting?
The fact is that most small business websites (1-10 employees) need about 500MB to 1500MB of file storage and 3-4GB of monthly data transfer. This isn't some figure we pulled out of the air, but is based on actual statistics from our own customers. Our sample data has been compiled over the past 5 years, so it carries a great deal of credibility. So why pay $8, 9 or even $10 or more a month for services you may never use. Yes, we realize that so-called unlimited hosting plans are offered for $4-5 a month as well, but the majority require you to pay 3 years in advance in order to get the lower monthly fee. Why layout $150 to $180 when at Net Locations you pay just $5.95 a month for all the storage and data transfer you really need? Our use of the CloudLinux OS provides a VPS "like" service for each hosted domain. CloudLinux provides a stable environment by isolating and controlling resource spikes to prevent entire servers going down. So if one site manages to cause issues due to a run-away script or a DDoS attack it won't affect the performance of your site. Unlike standard shared hosting where one site can crash all the sites on the server, the CloudLinux OS creates virtual environments so each site can run with its own resources. Unmetered What is Unmetered Bandwidth(Data Transfer)? First of all do not confuse the commonly used hosting term "Unlimited Bandwidth" with "Unmetered Data Transfer (Bandwidth)". The former is in common use on the Internet but is actually not properly named since bandwidth and data transfer are actually not the same thing. Bandwidth is a measure of connectivity relating to speed. Example, a 100 Mbps (megabits per second) Ethernet can, in theory, deliver 33,000 GB of data over a 30 day period. In reality it would be near impossible to sustain this kind of transfer every second of every day for a 30 day or longer period. So when you see hosting providers offer "unlimited bandwidth" they are selling you something that is simply impossible to deliver. It is just a marketing ploy to entice unsavvy website owners into buying their hosting services. There is a feeling of comfort because the site owner believes he'll never receive an invoice for over usage. The catch is that you're CPU share will be limited and you'll either be shutdown or "sold up" to a more expensive hosting plan. All hosts will have the excessive CPU usage clause in their TOS (Terms of Service) to protect themselves from actually having to pay for more bandwidth. For example (see above) 33,000 GB of bandwidth at a cost of $0.05/GB equates to a monthly cost of $1,650 - so what does unlimited bandwidth cost? Add the costs of the server, maintenance and support and the total cost of the server will be in the $2,300 to $2,500 range. There's needs to be 400+ sites on the server just to be for the costs. We can't offer "unlimited bandwidth" since we believe in full disclosure to our customers and of course, it can't be done as there are no servers that are capable of it. Unmetered bandwidth is a different concept simply meaning that there is no charge for extra bandwidth because you are allowed to use up to 100% of the server's capacity. Of course, beyond that charges must be applied. Unmetered does not mean unlimited!! We include 50 GB of unmetered bandwidth with each Utility Based Account. This allows for more than 10 times of bandwidth (data transfer) that most websites will ever use. For any site to use 50 GB of bandwidth in one month would mean in excess of some 450,000 page views. In turn that would require (unless the site is 85% static in nature) that site to probably need it's own dedicated, semi-dedicated, VPS or Cloud environment. For sites that use more than 50 GB monthly we then use bandwidth pooling to provide extra bandwidth on a temporary basis free of charge. If this is not possible and the site still functions properly with such a huge demand, we only charge $0.12/GB for extra bandwidth. In cases where the site has outgrown its shared hosting environment, we will assist the site owner with selecting the best hosting plan and assist with the migration. |
