In software based VPS (Virtual Private Server) the virtual machines share the same kernel and actually require the main node's resources (CPU, memory, etc.). This can lead to security issues if the software is not kept updated. The VPS also shares hardware with other sites on the dedicated machine it resides om. It is superior to shared hosting only because revenue to the provider is higher meaning that they can put fewer Websites on the VPS server which results in approved performance.
VDS (Virtual Dedicated Servers) are superior to shared hosting or to subpar virtual private servers (VPS) because they get their own dedicated operating system and are fully isolated from other virtual machines on the server hardware. Security is also greatly enhanced which is why some corporations prefer the hardware based virtualization. Dedicated Server
A dedicated server is exposed to single points of failure (SPOF)such as the hard drive, OS, email, etc. If a hard drive fails the server is offline and so are its services. This could result in hours of downtime.
Having said this it is also possible to set up a complex hosting configuration with several dedicated servers behind a load-balancer resulting in a resilient high performance solution. This solution requires expensive hardware for maximum performance and reliability - something VMware accomplishes at a fraction of the price.
